CLOSURE OF WHITEHAVEN MEDICAL CENTRE - HOW THIS MAY AFFECT WESTCROFT PATIENTS*

 

Whitehaven Medical Centre has reluctantly taken the decision to terminate its contract.

 

This means from July 31 the patients registered there will no longer be able to be seen by the practice. Primary care is facing ever increasing demand, and we know there are challenges recruiting GPs and locums. This highlights the vulnerability of single-handed GP practices, leaving them less resilient.

 

A process involving NHS North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS England and local Practices is now underway to ensure the safe care of those patients, and a process to ensure each patient is assigned to a new GP practice has started.

 

This will be a huge piece of work and will have an impact on all GP Practices in the area and potentially on other acute and community health services.

 

Our first priority is to ensure patients have access to a GP service, and in particular to ensure the right support is given to vulnerable patients

 

So what will this mean for our patients?

 

  • Over the next few weeks we will be receiving new patients so you may find you have to wait longer for an appointment during this time.
  • Our teams are working under more pressure and would appreciate your patience and support.
  • All clinicians are focussing on ensuring patients have the right access to the right care at the right time.

 

Please note that the practice will not be taking on any new patients from other practices during this time.

 

A reminder: Many common ailments can be treated following advice from your local pharmacy or by calling NHS 111.

We might be able to direct you to a more appropriate member of staff to help with your query.  Please don't be offended when our Receptionists ask for some more details of your condition.  If they know the nature of the problem they can ensure you see the right person.  We realise that things are personal, but by telling us what the problem is, it's much easier for us to ensure that you see the correct clinician.  All of our  staff are bound by patient confidentiality.

 

The local pharmacies offer a broad range of services through the 'minor ailments scheme'.  A clinical pharmacist is an experienced clinician who can treat many minor problems.  The practice does not prescribe antibiotics for illnesses which normally get better by themselves like viral illness - such as colds and flu, but you can seek help from the Pharmacist to give you advice on over the counter remedies.  Also included in the scheme are other self limiting conditions like indigestion, bites, head lice, cold sores, cystitis, constipation and oral infections.  You may wish to seek advice from the Pharmacy in these circumstances. If you are eligible for free prescriptions then you do not pay for drugs given by the pharmacy minor ailments scheme.
